Akumal, Mexico - #AtoZtravel

Last October I blogged every day as part of Rosalilium's #BEDN challenge. I loved this challenge!

To celebrate a year gone by I have decided to take up a similar challenge - this time set by myself. I will be blogging every day this November in a battle of A to Z travel, where I'll share some of the amazing but more obscure places I've travelled to in the world as I make my way through the alphabet.

If you'd like to join me on this travel blogging challenge please do. I'd love to hear about some of your favourite travel destinations. Tweet using #AtoZtravel and I'll retweet you, or just share your posts in my comment feed. Enjoy and Happy #AtoZtravel November!

Swimming with turtles in Akumal, Mexico...

Akumal is a small beach town half way between Playa del Carmen and Tulum on the Yucatan Peninsula of Mexico. While staying in a run down hostel in Playa del Carmen back in 2009 my hubby and I were told mystical stories of a breathtaking beach where one could simply walk into the water and swim freely with turtles in the wild!

We had to see if this place was for real for ourselves -  so we caught a bus, drove for about an hour where we were dropped off on a highway, walked ocean direction for another thirty minutes in the blistering heat and ended up here...

Akumal in the Mayan language means 'Land of turtles' and Akumal certainly lived up to it's name. We dropped our towels, ran for the water and within minutes were rewarded by this...

Turtles, turtles everywhere, swimming freely in beautiful clear water.
