Caye Caulker, Belize - #AtoZtravel

Monday, November 03, 2014

Caye Caulker is a tiny coral island off the coast of Belize in the Caribbean Sea -  about 8km long, and less than 1.6km wide. And it is the perfect place to kick back, relax and take some time out.

Hubby and I spent a glorious week here back in 2009 during our 6-month Central America backpacking odyssey. I have vivid memories of blue water as far as the eye can see, while lying back in a comfy hammock with a book, eating fresh banana and coconut bread and sipping some kind of rum based cocktail...

A shallow and narrow waterway known as 'the Split' divides Caye Caulker in two. Some locals tell the story of how the Split was created by Hurricane Hattie in 1961, but this is a myth according to Google. Nevertheless it is the perfect spot for a beach bar, cocktail and some reggae music.

One of the notable things about Caye Caulker is its proximity to the most amazing diving and snorkelling in Caye Caulker Marine Reserve - the world's second longest barrier reef. We saw hundreds of colourful tropical fish, eagle rays and swam with nurse sharks. Hands down this is the best snorkelling I have done anywhere in the world.

If you'd like to join me on this travel blogging challenge please do. I'd love to hear about some of your favourite travel destinations. Tweet using #AtoZtravel and I'll retweet you, or just share your posts in my comment feed. Enjoy and Happy #AtoZtravel November!

  3. Ahh, such gorgeous photos! The shades of blue in that first pic are beyond lovely. I'm currently sitting in many layers of warm clothing and still feeling cold so the thought of being on that beautiful beach is too much :)

    1. Thanks Marcella. I am too currently wrapped up warm trying to ignore the rain outside my London flat! Hoping one day I'll get back to these waters again...
