the beauty of Bruges in Autumn, Belgium

Saturday, February 21, 2015

It's fair to say I've been a bit spoilt over the years when it comes to travel. And although I really shouldn't admit this - sometimes  I can find visiting Europe a little bit dull. (I need a slap, right?!)

However, last Autumn I visited Bruges in Belgium with my family and fell back in love with Europe all over again. The buildings, architecture, skyline... it was just so damn pretty. And we had amazing weather with lots of dramatic skies to top it off... .

SEE: the silhouettes of red brick buildings, against a light blue puffy sky dotted with hot air balloons.

TASTE: the salt on my lips and fingers as I greedily indulge in the best triple-fried Belgium fries around.

SMELL: wet earth, coffee, canal water, chocolate!

HEAR: church bells, street traffic on cobbled lanes, the fizz of my freshly poured kriek cherry beer and laughter in the air around me.

FEEL: happy and relaxed. It's not that often I get to go on holiday with my parents.

  2. Gorgeous pictures!
I really love travelling to Europe, but I live in a North American city that's only about 150 years old and most of the architecture is just glass skyscrapers so seeing all the historical buildings is very refreshing for me. I guess to each his own, right?

  3. We visited Bruges this Christmas with my in-laws and loved it! That picture with the dog out the window is just adorable. I wish I was in sunny Spain this weekend but hoping we get some lovely sun in London!

    1. Thanks Holly - I really need to appreciate it more. When I lived in NZ Europe was always just a dream 24 hours of flight away. Think I've become a bit too content in my old age!

  8. Oh I have serious wanderlust right now! I have heard so many great things about Bruges of late - I'd seriously love to visit, it sounds right up my alley! I heard it's really quite affordable too which is great seeing as though lots of Europe tends to be a little less so! And how lucky you were in Spain on the weekend!

  9. I visited Bruges about 6 years ago and really enjoyed it, but over time my memory of it has really faded. Your photos have really brought home to me how pretty it is. Gent is also a fave of mine.

  10. You don't deserve a slap - I think a lot of us who are close to or living in Europe often end up taking it for granted but I too recently fell in love with it! Bruges looks beautiful and given how much I recently enjoyed Brussels, I'm tempted to visit Bruges one day soon perhaps at Christmas when it's also meant to be magical! Isn't the chocolate just amazing?!

    1. Oh yes, the chocolate is unmissable. Definitely check out Bruges if you have a chance, it's much quieter and a bit prettier than Brussels in my opinion, and I hear the Christmas Markets are fab!
